The assembly (10) mounts behind the vehicle's rear axle such that the auxiliary wheels (16) are in close proximity to the rear vehicle wheels (18), with the support framework (24) of the auxiliary wheels (16) entirely behind the mounting location of these wheels. The assembly (10) consists of two interconnected auxiliary wheels (16) independently supsended by a transversely extending torsion axle (32) and connected to the vehicle through a centrally located pair of common mounting brackets (50). The assembly (10) has a minimal longitudinal displacement relative to the main vehicle rear wheels (18) and is easily mounted beneath an existing vehicle.
