A marigold plant, a regenerable portion thereof and seed are disclosed whose flower petals, leaves or flower petals and leaves contain one or more of an enhanced neoxanthin plus violaxanthin ratio, an enhanced .beta.-carotene ratio, an enhanced lycopene ratio, an enhanced .alpha.-cryptoxanthin ratio, an enhanced phytoene ratio or an enhanced phytofluene ratio relative to that ratio in a non-mutant marigold. A marigold plant, a regenerable portion thereof and seed are also disclosed whose flower petals contain zeaxanthin esters and are substantially free of esters of both neoxanthin and violaxanthin, and wherein zeaxanthin constitutes at least about one-half of the extractable carotenoids when xanthophylls are assayed as alcohols. Also disclosed are methods of preparing such plants, oleoresins and comestible materials that have such carotenoid ratios.
L'invention concerne un souci, une partie regénérable de celui-ci et une semence dont les pétales des fleurs, les feuilles ou les pétales des fleurs et les feuilles présentent une ou plusieurs teneurs améliorées en néoxanthine et violaxanthine, une teneur améliorée en ?-carotène, une teneur améliorée en lycopène, une teneur améliorée en ?-cryptoxanthine, une teneur améliorée en phytoène ou une teneur améliorée en phytofluène comparativement à une telle teneur chez un souci non mutant. L'invention concerne également un souci, une partie regénérable de celui-ci et une semence dont les pétales des fleurs renferment des esters de zéaxanthine et sont sensiblement exempts d'esters de néoxanthine et de violaxanthine, la zéaxanthine constituant au moins environ la moitié des caroténoïdes pouvant être extraits quand des xanthophylles sont analysés comme étant des alcools. L'invention concerne enfin des procédés de préparation de telles plantes, d'oléorésines et de substances comestibles présentant de telles teneurs en caroténoïdes.
