This is a powered apparatus originally designed to straighten lumber on a moving conveyor, in front of a lug loading system, at a planer mill. Because of varying lengths of lumber, the longer pieces tend to pivot around the shorter pieces. This apparatus applies a downward force on the even end of the pieces, increasing the resultant friction between the work and the moving conveyor directly under the apparatus, thereby straightening the pieces. The arms illustrated are for pieces of the same thickness; a different arm configuration will also handle pieces of different thickness. It can also be modified to convert a tangential force to an intensified normal force, and applied to any material, stationary or moving. Force is transferred through pivoting arms attached to a carriage, in an almost perpendicular direction to the action of the actuating force.
