ABSTRACT This invention relates to novel organotantalum catalysts comprising tantalum and a silyl-substituted cyclopentadienyl moiety having the formula C5H5-x(SiR63)x, wherein each R6 may be the same or different and is hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl or alkoxy, and x is an integer from 1 to 5. It also relates to a process for the selective dimerization of a 1-olefin to a dimer having a 1- butene moiety whlch comprises contacting the 1-olefin with the novel organotantalum catalyst at a reaction temperature and pressure such that the dimer which is optionally substituted at the 2,3-carbon atoms is formed. The organotantalum catalysts of the present invention exhibit a higher activity towards the dimerization of 1-olefins than the known tantalum dimerization catalysts.
