Device for plugging a tap hole comprising an expulsion piston 24 fitted in a plugging chamber 20, a first double- acting hydraulic actuator positioned behind the piston 24 and a first channel 42 passing through the piston 24 for the passage of a piercing rod 100, and the first actuator. The device further comprises a second double-acting hydraulic actuator positioned behind the first actuator, equipped with a second channel 44 for the passage of a rod 100, a control means 50 for imposing a to-and-fro movement on the second actuator, and a first gripping means 54 movable by the second actuator. This first gripping means 54 making it possible to grip and release at will a rod 100 in order to push it, by successive travels, through the two channels 44, 42 in the direction of the plugging nose-piece 18.
