The invention comprises a tape cartridge or container for use with typewriters, printers, and the like having a non-reusable tape or ribbon, said cartridge having a take up reel drive member and housing with a take up reel post and supply reel post therein. The cartridge has a detachable sub cartridg The sub cartridge has a take up reel and hub and supply reel and hub and a panel mounted to the hubs to connect the hubs together in spaced relation. The sub cartridge has its hubs detachably mounted to the posts or the cartridge. The panel of the sub cartridge has an elongated frictional strip extending along the panel between the hubs to provide frictional engagement and drag along the edge of the tape wound on the reels of the sub cartridge so as to reduce inertial overtravel and so that the tape will be taut as it passes between the reels for printing by a print wheel and the like. The cartridge has spring means urging said drive member and take up reel of the sub cartridg into engagement relative to one another in the cartridge with one movably mounted with respect to the other, handle means to move said drive member and take up reel away from and out of engagement with one another, and latch mesns to latch one away from the other to facilitate the removal and replacement of the sub cartridge.
