2065037 9015678 PCTABS00003 When deforming an elongate workpiece (A), as by forging, rolling, or the like, it is necessary to know the exact position of the workpiece along its length with respect to the deforming means. To this end, one end of the workpiece (A) is secured to a carriage (4) in abutting relation with a stop member (8) and the carriage (4) is moved in the direction away from the deforming means (1). The position of the stop member (8) with respect to the deformin g means (1) is continuously detected thus giving an indication of the position of the workpiece (A) with respect to the deforming means (1).
