To this end, one end of the workpiece (A) is secured to a carriage (4) in abutting relation with a stop member (8) and the carriage (4) is moved in the direction away from the deforming means (1). The position of the stop member (8) with respect to the deformin g means (1) is continuously detected thus giving an indication of the position of the workpiece (A) with respect to the deforming means (1).
