ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A task control mechanism in a processing system having at least one central processor and at cast one memory module for storing an operating system and a plurality of processes to be executed by the central processor(s), which processes require different events to occur before their execution can be completed includes input means coupled to the central processor(s) to receive therefrom a command to allocate an event token to a currently executing process and then to indicate that the currently executing process is in a wait state the allocation of the event token indicating that a required event is being initiated, process table means coupled to the input means for receiving and storing designations of processes scheduled to be executed by the processing system, event table means coupled to the input means to store status information about various event tokens, output means coupled to the process table means, event table means and the central processor(s), and control means coupled to the input means to receive the command to allocate, the control means being coupled to the output means, process table means and event table means, the central processor(s) including means to transmit a process designation for insertion in the process table after receipt of the event token and before receipt of the move command, the process designation representing the process that implements the event.
