ABSTRACT The present invention provides a method for producing an alumina-titanium carbide material. A titanium carbide powder is ball milled and mixed with alumina powder and the resultant mixed powder is com- pressed and heated at a first rate of 400° to 1000°C per minute while a constant physical pressure is applied thereto. An increased physical pressure is applied to said powder upon reaching an onset of powder shrinkage and the powder is heated at a second rate while said increased physical pressure applied. The powder is sintered at a rate of densification that approaches the theoretical maximum density of the powder until material densification is complete.
