ABSTRACT A powder, for example a mixture of titanium carbide and alumina powder, is densified into a fine grained sintered ceramic by applying a first constant physical pressure to the powder and heating it at a first predetermined temperature rate to onset of powder shrinkage, and then applying an increased second physical pressure and a second, lower heating rate. To identify approximately the natural rate of densification, the density of a sintered first batch is recorded, and then a second batch is similarly treated by applying a constant pressure and predetermined heating rate thereto to onset of powder shrinkage and then applying an increased third physical pressure and a third heating rate to the second batch and recording the density of the second sintered batch, to identify the density of the first and second batches that is closest to the theoretical maximum density of the material. Conditions for approximating the natural densification rate can thus be identified. After the onset of powder shrinkage the densification rate is sub- stantially constant but it becomes non-linear as the condition of maximum densification is approached.
