An interface to a network such as the internet is connected via an access network to user terminal. Interposed in this path is a branch point which examines items of data received from the interface and routes them to the user terminal selectively in dependence on information contained in the items of data, either via a first transmission means or via an alternative transmission means such as a satellite link.
