The present invention relates to the switching of traffic signals to/from telecommunications channels and, particularly, relates to the switching of traffic for mobile radio and telephone systems. Switching of traffic is conventionally provided in a radio based station by a separate switching matrix. The separate switching matrix connects one channel to another utilising a time-space switching method. The channel connections are re-configurable under control of a processor device. The present invention obviates the need for a separate switching matrix and therefore reduces the size, complexity and cost of the base station. Instead of providing a separate switching matrix, transceiver units are provided which plug directly into a backplane carrying time-space switching buses, the transceiver units being arranged to control signal time-slot allocation directly to the buses.
