The present invention is a standardized host-to-switch application program interface (API) for performing call control processing, capable of being customized to meet telecommunications application and network signalling protocol requirements. The universal API comprises one or more generic messages having programmable fields for transmitting commands, status, and data between the host application and the switch. The present invention further comprises a programmable telecommunication switch that provides a user with the ability to define a desired API protocol, either "standard" or custom in nature, for performing any desired , switching functions. The present invention includes a protocol development environment which enables a user to define a separate finite state machine for each port provided by the switch. Each finite state machine may be independently defined by combining a series of elementary processing steps, called atomic functions, into primitives, which are in turn combined with states and events to define the desired state machine. Such state machines may include atomic functions configured to generate predetermined messages under predetermined conditions and containing predetermined information. Such state machines may further include the ability to respond to state events that include the receipt of generic API messages configured to provide the state machine with information from the host application.
L'invention concerne une interface standardisée, entre ordinateur central et commutateur, de programme d'application (API) servant à effectuer le traitement de commandes d'appels et capable d'être personnalisée afin de répondre aux besoins de protocoles de signalisation de réseau et d'application de télécommunications. Cette interface (API) universelle comprend un ou plusieurs messages génériques possédant des champs programmables servant à transmettre des instructions, des états et des données entre l'application de l'ordinateur central et le commutateur. L'invention concerne, de plus, un commutateur programmable de télécommunications conférant à l'usager la capacité de définir un protocole d'API souhaité, de nature standard ou personnalisée, afin de remplir toute fonction souhaitée de commutation. L'invention comprend un environnement de développement de protocole permettant à l'usager de définir un automate fini séparé pour chaque point d'accès fourni par le commutateur. Chaque automate fini peut être défini de façon indépendante au moyen de la combinaison d'une série d'étapes de traitement élémentaires, dénommées fonctions atomiques, en primitives, combinées à leur tour à des états et à des événements, afin de définir l'automate fini souhaité. Ces automates finis peuvent comprendre des fonctions atomiques conçues pour générer des messages prédéterminés dans des conditions prédéterminées et contenant des informations prédéterminées. Ces automates finis peuvent, de plus, présenter la capacité de réagir à des événements d'état comprenant la réception de messages génériques d'API conçus pour transmettre à l'automate fini l'information provenant de l'application de l'ordinateur central.
