A transmitter (3) or a reciver (4) for a telecommunications network is describedfor transmitting digital information signals at at least one centre frequency, wherein said transmitter or said receiver (3, 4) is bandwidth agile independent of the centre frequency and information rate of each information signal. The present invention also provides a radio telecommunications system including a base station transmitter (1) and a remote station receiver (2), said base station transmitter (1) being a transmitter (3) and said remote station receiver (2) being a receiver (4) as described above. The system may be a mobile radio telecommunications system and said remote station (2) is a mobile station. The present invention includes a method of operating a telecommunications network, comprising the steps of transmitting at least one digital information signal at at least one centre frequency, and adapting the bandwidth of said transmitted signal independently of the information rate or centre frequency of said transmitted information signal.
