The present invention relates to improvements in automatic meter reading systems. In particular, the invention relates to a telemetry interface unit (TIU) and system having an inbound and outbound calling window that does not interfere with a customer's use of their telephone line. The TIU provides an interface between a telephone line and any type of end device including but not limited to end devices such as utility meters, sensors or security devices with the appropriate interface card installed in the TIU.
