IMPROVED TELEPHONE ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A telephone handset having a receiver and a transmitter and line seizure capability by a manually actuatable on-off switch. Line release is either through this switch or through an automatic line release switch. The on-off switch translates to an "on" position from an "off" position, and in this translation applies a force to a link through a spring that tends to rotate the link. A step of the switch prevents rotation by bearing against a pawl of the link until a notch registers with the pawl, whereupon the link rotates to an "on" position. When the lever rotates, a crank of the link pulls on the automatic line release switch to cock it. The automatic line release switch engages a finger on a cradle when the handset is placed on the cradle, and when engaged the release switch rotates the lever and the on-off switch to its "off" posi- tion, opening blade contacts to release the line. The on- off switch may be switched to "off" manually independently of the automatic line release switch and when this is done, the pawl rides out of the notch to rotate the link and retract the automatic line release switch. The lever, on- off switch, and automatic line release switch are dynami- cally balanced to avoid inertial actuation. The handset includes a housing formed of an upper shell, a lower shell, and two grip pieces. The lower shell has a well that receives a key pad circuit board switching network, a key pad, and an escutcheon in stacked fashion, with the escutcheon secured to the lower shell and clamping the lower shell and grips to the upper shell by threaded faste- ners. The upper shell and the lower shell are similarly clamped together at one end of the wall by fasteners.
