CA 2142573

A voice mail indicator or circuit having a selection switch which in one position allows the circuit to periodically poll the telephone line to determine the presence or absence of a voice mail message. In the second position of the selection circuit, detection of ringing of the telephone or an off-hook condition will reset a timing circuit. As long as the telephone is ringing or is off-hook, the timing circuit remains reset and the timing cycle does not begin. Once the telephone stops ringing or the receiver is back on-hook, the timing cycle begins. At the completion of the timing cycle, the telephone line is polled to determine the presence or absence of voice mail. The timing circuit is then disabled until it is reset again by a ringing or off-hook condition.
