ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In order to facilitate the sighting of a star or other celestial object, a novel method of operating a telescope is provided herein. The method comprises the first step of select- ing a reference celestial object, for example a star, substanti- ally centered in the field of view of the telescope. The name or coordinates for such reference celestial object is then entered into a database to select data for a corresponding graphics dis- play including, and substantially centered upon, an artefact representing the reference celestial object. The relative posi- tions of the telescope and graphics display are then established as a datum. Data for a second artefact and corresponding sur- rounding graphics display is then selected from such database. The effective distance between the first artefact and the second artefact is then determined. Finally, on the basis of such dis- tance determination, the telescope is mechanically driven to such a position as to display the second artefact within the field of view.
