ABSTRACT A telescopic control unit for an atherectomy device to incrementally cut a passageway through obstructive tissue in arteries comprises a cylindrical-shaped hollow housing which has a tube-shaped telescoping insert coaxially aligned within an interior chamber of the housing. The telescoping insert is held in place with respect to the housing by threadably engaging a ring-shaped cap to the housing which causes an O- ring to urge against the insert and hold it securely in place. A tube-shaped sheath or guiding catheter for an atherectomy cutter is connected to the distal end of the insert. A cutter assembly comprised of a torque tube and cutter is slidably carried inside the guiding catheter. The torque tube is operably connected to a handpiece drive unit coupled to the control unit to rotatably drive the cutter. Selective control of telescoping insert incrementally advances the handpiece drive unit, and then the cutter, deeper into the artery. The obstructive tissue cuttings are removed from the artery by a suction system which is attached at the proximal end of the housing. The housing device is also equipped with a port for injecting medicinal fluids therethrough to aid in the operation.
