ABSTRACT A removable spanner bar for maintaining a predetermined distance between a joist and an adjacent support surface. The joist has a plurality of horizontal, elongated slots therein adapted to receive and engage with a notched end of the spanner bar. The spanner bar comprises a tubular member having first end means on one end thereof adapted to engage the support sur- face, the other end of the tubular member having indexing means fixed thereto, a flat elongated member adapted to fit and slide within the tubular member and having a second end with a notch on the upper end thereof adapted to receive and engage the slots in the top chord, and having a plurality of notches in the lower edge thereof, and a handle thereon for rotation of the elongated member about the axis of the tubular member. The spanner bar being locked at a predetermined length when the slot in the end of the elongated member is en- gaged with the top chord of a joist and a notch in the lower edge is engaged with the indexing means.
