ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to telescoping handles. Inner and outer telescoping members are provided which are rela- tively movable between a contracted position wherein there is a substantial overlap of the members and a fully extended position wherein one member extends a substantial distance beyond the other member. A detent is carred on one of the members and spring means urges the detent into engagement with a longitudinally extending surface of the other member. A recess is formed in the other member at a position such that in the fully extended posi- tion the detent is pressed into engagement with the recess. The detent and the recess are configured so that extension of the members beyond the fully extended position is prevented but con- traction of the members from the fully extended position is permitted. One of said inner member and said outer member have a portion which, between the two positions, fits closely with the other of the inner member and outer member whereby relative extension or contraction is frictionally resisted. Between the two positions, the detent is urged into sliding contact with the longitudinally extending surface whereby relative extension or contraction of the members is further frictionally resisted. The inner and outer members have surfaces which are circular in cross- section, and the recess extends around the entire circumference of the surfaces, so that the members can rotate indefinitely with respect to each other. One end of the outer member is closed and the clearance between the exterior surface of the inner member and the interior surface of the outer member is sufficiently close that relative movement of the members is pneumatically resisted.
