A locking mechanism is operated with a key which rotates a lock cylinder within a housing. The mechanism includes a dust cover between an outer end piece and the lock cylinder. The end piece seals the lock cylinder and dust cover within the housing. A spring member urges the dust cover against the end piece to reduce a gap between the dust cover and the end piece. The spring member is located at either end of the lock cylinder. When the spring member is positioned between the lock cylinder and the end piece, the spring urges the dust cover away from the lock cylinder. When the spring member is positioned between the lock cylinder and an interior shoulder of the housing, the spring member urges the lock cylinder and the dust cover toward the end piece.
