ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A solid state television camera with a pattern generator is disclosed for permitting a character display in a portion of a television picture. Both a solid state image sensor and a pattern generator are driven by the same synchronizing signal generator. A pattern signal generated by the character generator is superimposed upon or replaces a portion of the picked up image signal so that the pattern can be inserted into the picture. -i-
