An apparatus for alerting an operator heating a cooking utensil that contents of the cooking utensil have attained a boiling temperature comprises a temperature sensing element and an audible alarm mounted in a housing. A battery is mounted in the housing and is operative to power the alarm, and a tether attached to the housing is operative to releasably attach the housing to a lid of the cooking utensil such that the temperature sensing element is operative to sense a temperature of the lid. A circuit connects the battery, the temperature sensing element, and the alarm such that the alarm is activated when the temperature of the lid reaches an elevated alert temperature indicating that the contents of the cooking utensil have attained the boiling temperature.
