A wavelength demultiplexing device has a first monolithic waveguide block, and a second monolithic waveguide block. spaced from the first block to receive optical signals from the first block. The first monolithic waveguide block has an integrated means for separating an input beam into sub-beams having different central wavelengths. The second monolithic waveguide block. has closely spaced waveguides for receiving wavelengths of light corresponding to at least some of the sub-beams of light. A temperature compensator is provided in one of the second monolithic waveguide block and the first block for coupling the predetermined wavelengths of light emanating from the first block with predetermined waveguides of the second monolithic waveguide block. Each waveguide is for receiving a predetermined wavelength of light, and the temperature compensation means is provided to effect a relative displacement between the first and second waveguide blocks when the position of the sub-beams corresponding to the predetermined wavelengths of light changes with a change in temperature, to more efficiently couple the predetermined wavelengths of light with predetermined waveguides.
