A time-of-flight mass spectrometer that comprises optical elements, including at least a source (120) of ions and an ion detector arrangement (160), and a spacer (330), at least one of the optical elements and the spacer (330) being made of materials which have different thermal expansion coefficients, combined in such a way that the length of the drift region (140) is variant, and self adjusting with temperature. The adjustment is such as to compensate for the length changes resulting from thermal expansion or contraction in other ion optical elements, such that ions of substantially equivalent mass to charge ratios maintain a constant flight time though the system. This allows for use of standard construction methods for the ion optical elements.

L'invention concerne un spectromètre de masse à temps de vol comprenant des éléments optiques, y compris au moins une source ionique (120) et un ensemble détecteur d'ions (160), ainsi qu'un espaceur (330), les éléments optiques ou l'espaceur (330) étant en matières présentant différents coefficients de dilatation thermique, combinées de telle sorte que la longueur de la zone de dérive (140) est variable, avec auto-adaptation en fonction de la température. L'adaptation sert à compenser les variations de longueur résultant de la dilatation thermique ou de la contraction thermique dans d'autres éléments optiques ioniques, de sorte que des ions de rapports masse/charge sensiblement équivalents maintiennent un temps de vol constant dans le système. Ceci permet l'application de procédés de conception standard pour les éléments optiques ioniques.
