A material for temperature compensation comprises a polycrystalline material containing a solid solution of .beta.-quartz or .beta.-eucryptite as a main crystal, and it has a negative coefficient of thermal expansion. The interplanar spacing of crystal planes giving a main peak in X-ray diffractometry is less than 3.52 angstroms.
