The present invention provides an improved roll press for the pressing of materials such as paper. The roll press of the present invention includes a first press roll supported in a first bearing bracket, which in turn is supported on a machine frame. The present invention also includes a second press roll supported in a second bearing bracket, and the second press roll is coupled to the first press roll by flexurally soft tie bar groups which are movable in the direction of the main axes of the press rolls to permit, in a loaded condition of the roll press, the second bearing bracket to be movable relative to the first bearing bracket. The tie bar groups are arranged in a plane which is approximately parallel to the press plane, and attachment means permit the tie bars to be inserted into the bearing brackets along the plane of the tie bars for being attached to the bearing brackets.
