ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A tensioner is provided for a power transmission belt which is associated with a tensioner roller having an axis and a reference fixation point. The tensioner includes a return spring, for tensioning the belt through controlling the displacement of the roller, the spring being covered with an elastomer. A sleeve is formed by the elastomer-covered spring. Hydraulic-type dampening means are provided for the dampening of vibrations generated in the belt, the dampening means including a first chamber and a second chamber substantially filled with a liquid, at least one of the chambers having a variable volume and being limited by at least a portion of the sleeve. Finally, a valve device is situated between the first chamber and the second chamber, for the passage of the liquid between the chambers, whereby the dampening is carried out.
