A tensioner has a base, a pivot shaft and a pivot arm journal mounted on the pivot shaft. The pivot shaft has an external bearing surface. The pivot arm has an internal bearing surface. A spring biases the pivot arm to rotate about the pivot shaft in a first sense. A layer of bushing material is deposited on at least one of the bearing surfaces.
