The invention relates to a tensioning and absorbing element for chain drives which comprises an elastically deformable ring part and a toothed ring arranged on the circumference thereof. The ring part is designed such that it is circular when in a non-tensioned and non-mounted state, and takes on an elliptical shape when between a loose side and tight side of the chain drive. The toothed ring engages with the loose side and the tight side and transmits a tension force generated by the elliptical deformation of the ring part on both the loose and tight sides. According to the invention, the ring part is designed so that the cross-section profile steadily changes with increasing deformation of the ring part in such a way that the ratio between the height of the cross-section profile and the width of the cross-section profile is approximately 4 % smaller when the ring part is in a maximally pretensioned state than when the ring part is in a tension-free state.
