TITLE OF THE INVENTION "TERNARY PROTECTIVE GAS MIXTURE AND ARC WELDING OR HARD-FACING OF STEELS" ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention provides a ternary protective gas mixture containing, by volume, 2.5 to 3.5% carbon dioxide, 0.8 to 1.2% hydrogen, and the balance being argon. The ternary gas mixture may be used to give a protective atmosphere in welding or hard-facing steel alloys where an electric arc is struck between a consumable electrode comprising a steel alloy wire and a molten metal zone.
