Abstract: A process for the production of tertiary hydroxyalkyl xanthines of the general formula I Image (I) wherein at least one of the groups R1 and R3 is a tertiary hydroxyalkyl group of the formula Image (Ia) in which R4 is an alkyl group having up to 3 carbon atoms and n is an integer in the range from 2 to 5, the other group, if any, of R1 or R3 is hydrogen or an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical R5 having up to 6 carbon atoms, the carbon chain of which may be interrupted by up to 2 oxygen atoms or substituted with an oxo group or up to two hydroxy groups, R2 is an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms. The products are suitable for the preparation of pharmaceu- tical compositions, particularly for use in the prophylaxis or treatment of peripheral or cerebral disturbed blood circulation or both.
