An apparatus for generating a test gas (for example, ethanol) has at least two containers that are connected in series and are filled with a calibrating solution. A carrier gas is passed through these calibrating containers (4) and this is enriched with the calibrating solution that is in the solution, depending on its vapour pressure at the given temperature. In order to prevent or reduce the depletion of the calibrating solution with respect to the components that are needed for the gaseous calibrating substance, a defined quantity of base solution (21) is transported through the calibrating container (4) in counterflow to the direction of delivery of the carrier gases.
