Abstract Disclosed is a method and apparatus for testing optical fibers which, unlike prior art arrangements, does not require optical directional couplers, which couplers cause optical power losses. A driver circuit pulses a laser light source to generate optical pulse signals which are coupled to a light source. A light receiving device including an optoelectric transducer receives waves of opposite direction caused by optical pulses generated in the test fiber and outputted from one end of it. The receiving device is disposed at a side geometrically opposite the output end of the light source from which light is outputted and coupled into a test fiber in order to receive the light outputted from one end of the fiber after it has passed through the coupling means and light source.
