ABSTRACT Test devices and a process for making the test devices are disclosed in which reagent matrix areas attached to substrate are protected axially in the direction of the elongated substrate by a surface(s) adjacent to and in close proximity to each matrix area extending to at least the identical height of the matrix material. The resulting surface(s) protects said matrices from damage, particularly during wiping operations in which excess liquid and/or material is removed from the matrices. MS-1368
