This invention is a hand tool tethering system for use with hand tools (21) that includes a retractor (13) adapted to be included in a housing (14) of the hand tool (21), a tether (17) attached to the hand tool's retractor mechanism (13) at one end, and to a coupling device (20) at the opposite end for attachment to an operator or to a selected support structure. The retractor mechanism (13) allows the tether (17) to be movable between a stored position and a functional position.
