The present invention provides tetraazaporphins represented by the formula: (I) Image wherein M is Si, Ge or Sn; Y is an aryloxy group, an alkoxy group, a trialkylsiloxy group, a triarylsiloxy group, a trialkoxysiloxy group, a triaryloxysiloxy group, a trityloxy group or an acyloxy group, and two Y's may be the same or different; A1, A2, A3 and A4 are independently an aromatic ring which may have one or more organic substituents, and at least one of A1, A2, A3 and A4 is a nitrogen-containing aromatic ring. Also provided by the invention is a process for producing said tetraazaporphins. The tetraazaporphins of the present invention are useful as materials for forming recording layers in optical recording media, organic photoconducting materials or liquid crystal display materials. Optical recording media employing a tetraazaporphin as defined above are also disclosed herein.
