ABSTRACT A text comparator includes a decoded data memory (13) containing one shift register (SR20-SR7F) for each symbol forming the data base. The decoded signal is applied to the shift register associated with that character, and a clock signal is applied to each shift register. The decoded data memory provides signals indicating the most recently received character, and each preceding K characters. The shift registers are connected to logical gates to provide a signal when the desired text has been located. Word counters, paragraph counters, and other devices are employed to provide special text comparison functions. Another embodiment includes word logic, delimiter logic, set logic, set combination logic, proxim- ity logic, and programming logic. Delimiter logic serves to monitor the characters received and provides signals depicting whether the received character is a predefined delimiter character. Word logic serves to store data regarding predefined words to be located and provides signals when such predefined words are located. Set logic receives delimiter signals and word signals and provides signals when selected words are located in the same sentence, same paragraph, etc. The set combination logic combines signals from the set logic to generate signals in response to more complex searches. Proximity logic provides signals indicating when predefined words detected by word logic 112, or predefined set of words, as detected by set logic 114, or a combination of this information, occurs within a predefined proximity. Programming logic receives search strategy instructions and provides timing, addressing, and data signals to word logic, delimiter logic, set logic, set combination logic, and proximity logic.
