A general purpose method for text enhancement that is independent of the type of scanner that is used to scan a document or the device printing the document and is tolerant of the artifacts and defects that the scanning process introduces on the text, mainly blurring. A window of size W x W is constructed on a scanned page with the target pixel at the center of the window and the amount of ink in the window is calculated and the number of pixels that are darker than the center pixel is counted. The window is moved along the page and each pixel on the page has a chance to be the center of a window and be allocated ink. The invention reallocates the amount of ink in full quantities of the darkest value. Only the center pixel actually has its ink reallocated. A key principle is to make an attempt to allocate the ink pixel by pixel in the window, where the darkest pixel gets ink, the second darkest gets ink, and so on, until there is no more ink remaining in the bank. If the center pixel is later in darkness and there is no ink left in the bank, then it is set to white. If the center pixel is reached before the ink runs out, then it is set to black.
L'invention concerne une méthode universelle d'amélioration de texte dépendant du type de scanner utilisé pour balayer un document ou du dispositif d'impression du document, et tolérant aux artéfacts et aux défauts introduits par le processus de balayage sur le texte, principalement l'allongement du point. Une fenêtre de taille W x W est construite sur une page balayée, le pixel cible se trouvant au centre de ladite fenêtre, la quantité d'encre dans la fenêtre étant calculée et le nombre de pixels plus sombres que le pixel central étant compté. La fenêtre est déplacée le long de la page et chaque pixel de la page peut former le centre de la fenêtre et se voir attribuer de l'encre. Le procédé de l'invention permet de réattribuer la quantité d'encre totale de la valeur la plus sombre. De l'encre est réattribuée seulement au pixel central. Un principe clé consiste à essayer d'attribuer l'encre pixel par pixel dans la fenêtre, le pixel le plus sombre recevant de l'encre, puis le deuxième le plus sombre et ainsi de suite, jusqu'à ce qu'il ne reste plus d'encre dans la banque d'encre. Si le pixel central n'est pas placé en premier pour ce qui concerne le degré de clarté et qu'il n'y a plus d'encre dans la banque, il est donc réglé sur blanc. Si le pixel est atteint avant que l'encre soit épuisé, il est ensuite réglé sur le noir.
