A text enhancement method (1) and apparatus (17) for the presentation of text for improved human reading. The method (1) includes extracting text specific attributes from machine readable text and varying the text presentation in accordance with the attributes (2). The preferred embodiment of the method (1): extracts parts of speech and punctuation from a sentence, applies folding rules which use the parts of speech to determine folding points (6), and presents text segments (14) each on a new line and having a determined horizontal displacement (12) based on the text specific attributes (2). One method displays text over bent curves having a shape based on text content (16). Another method includes displaying relative text position within a hierarchy using alternating vertically and horizontally tiled planes. Another method supports reading text segments across opposed pages without waiting for paging (23). Yet another method displays text to allow reading from bottom to top as though from front to back (25). Still another method displays words in colors reflecting the relationships between the words and the larger text segments of which they are apart (27).
L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil de mise en valeur de texte servant à une présentation de textes qui facilite la lecture par un humain. Le procédé consiste à extraire d'un texte lisible par machine des attributs spécifiques au texte et à modifier la présentation du texte en fonction de ces attributs. Le mode de réalisation préféré de ce procédé consiste en ce qui suit: extraire à partir d'une phrase des parties du discours et la ponctuation; appliquer des règles de pliage utilisant les parties du discours pour déterminer les points de pliage et; présenter chacun des segments du texte à la ligne, avec un décalage horizontal déterminé qui est basé sur les attributs spécifiques au texte. Selon l'un des procédés, le texte affiché suit des courbes dont la forme dépend du contenu. Selon un autre procédé, les emplacements relatifs du texte sont affichés à l'intérieur d'une hiérarchie, au moyen de plans alternants inclinés horizontalement et verticalement. Un troisième procédé permet de lire des segments du texte à travers les pages opposées sans avoir à attendre que la pagination se fasse. Un quatrième procédé prévoit l'affichage du texte que l'on peut lire du bas vers le haut comme s'il était lu depuis la partie avant vers la partie arrière. Enfin, un des procédés permet d'afficher les mots en utilisant des couleurs qui reflètent les rapports entre, d'une part, les mots et, d'autre part, les segments du texte dont ils sont éloignés.
