A texture compositing apparatus (figure 6) and method for combining multiple independent texture colors in a variety of ways in a single execution pass using a single texture compositing unit (TCU) (304) per texture. The TCU (304) receives a control signal, (216) a blend factor (320), a local data signal (Clocal/Alocal) (226C, 228C), and an output data signal (Cin/Ain) (218B, 220B) generated by another TCU, the local data signal and the ouput data signal represent a texture color in a RGBA format. Based upon the control signal (216), the TCU (304) can generate an output signal (218C, 220C) based on a variety of functions. The outputs that can be generated include but are not limited to: (1) zero; (2) one; (3) Cin; (4) Clocal; (5) Cin + Clocal; (6) Cin - Clocal; (7) Cin * Clocal; (8) Cin * Clocal + Alocal; (9) Cin * Alocal + Clocal; (10) (Cin - Clocal) * Fblend + Clocal; and (11) (Cin - Clocal) * (1- Fblend) + Clocal. Another feature of the invention is that multiple TCUs can be serially coupled to enable addition texture colors to be combined in a single execution path.

L'invention porte sur un appareil (figure 3) et un procédé de composition de textures permettant de combiner différentes couleurs indépendantes de texture, de différentes manières et en une seule passe d'exécution par texture, à l'aide d'une unité de composition de texture unique dite TCU (304). La TCU (304) reçoit un signal de commande (216), un facteur de mélange (320), un signal de données locales (C¿local?/A¿local?) (226C, 228C), et un signal de données de sortie (C¿in?/A¿in?) (218B, 220B) produit par une autre TCU, le signal de données locales et le signal de données de sortie représentant une texture de couleur en format RGBA. En fonction du signal de commande (216) la TCU (304) peut produire un signal de sortie (218C, 220C) basé sur une variété de fonctions. Les signaux de sortie pouvant être produits comportent sans que ce soit limité: (1) zéro; (2) un; (3) C¿in?; (4) C¿local?; (5) C¿in? + C¿local?; (6) C¿in? - C¿local?; (7) C¿in? * C¿local?; (8) C¿in? * C¿local? + A¿local?; (9) C¿in? * A¿local? + C¿local?; (10) (C¿in? - C¿local?) * F¿mélange? + C¿local?; et (11) C¿in? - C¿local? * (F¿mélange?) + C¿local?.
