This system uses inert gases to smother fires. In the first application, carbon monoxide genertaed by engines mounted on a flat bed truck is refrigerated and then enters a reservoir attached to the entrance to the burning building. The gas may pass through the reservoir to fill the entire building, or it can be directed to a particular part of the building where the fire is located. The gas may also be directed from the reser- voir to exterior fires. In a second application, compressed and cooled carbon dio- xide is used instead of carbon monoxide and is delivered to the scene of the fire either in a gas tanker truck or in cylinders delivered in a smaller vehicle. Both of these applications would extinguish an advanced fire faster than water, cause less damage to the building, and require less costly equipment. In addition, they would be more effective than water than dealing with certain types of fires, such as fires fed by volatile fuels, chemical fires and elect- rical fires. In a third application, to fight forest and. brush fires, carbon monoxide or smoke stack gas is delivered from a press- urized and refrigerated tanker truck to a steel box moving over ground fires and to flames above ground by adjustable tubes. This would be a valuable addition to water bombers and ground crews with shovels and hoses.
