The presented mechanism for closing and opening a garage door results in an improvement and simplification over the prior art integral device for a garage door opener U.S. patent No. 4472910, which requires: - a motor coupled to the drive shaft of the door; - a pulley, which can be mounted only outside of the garage door in a non central position; - a clutch mechanism with a gear, worm, latch, cam pair, support brackets, and a frame An improved mechanism for opening and closing a garage door, wherein a motor directly rotates the drive shaft, is presented with the non loose connection of the drive shaft and the door, which is provided by a cable, stretching between the door's bar and the shaft's two coupled half drums. So the shaft rotation makes the garage door travel up and down. The motor rotates the drive shaft by a hook with two changeable positions. It allows opening and closing the garage door manually in case of emergency.
