Hydro dams use water to harness the power of gravity. The Mine Shaft Generator. uses air, which is heated and pressur- ized in an enclosed shaft. A plunger descends multiplying both heat and pressure driving the air into a reservoir. Turbines and engines driven by the air and heat exchangers in the reser- voir provide power to drive generators Energy developed is the product of the weight and gravity driven velocity of the plunger, which increases with the depth of the shaft. Ballast which is disposed of at the bottom of the shaft increases the weight of the plunger. An air-tight dome at the top of the shaft creates a vacu- um in the shaft when the plunger descends. Turbines in round openings in the dome are driven by inrushing air to provide additional power.
