A process is provided for the recovery of cobalt and copper from source materials such as white mattes metals or other suitable susceptible materials in which iron is present in significant quantities as well. The sub-divided source material is leached, advantageously at atmospheric pressure using copper sulphate and a small amount of sulphuric acid to dissolve iron and cobalt and cement some copper from solution. The copper residue is calcined to copper oxide which is used to precipitate iron as Goethite from the filtrate and regenerate copper sulphate for recycling to the leach step. Copper and cobalt are recovered from a bleed stream of the regenerated copper sulphate.
