Air entrained vortex or submerged vortex may form when water or liquid is pumped by a pump. These vortices cause damaging vibrations to the pump and its motor and results in inefficient operation with reduced pumping capacity. Typical remedial measures to reduce, eliminate and/or prevent these objectionable vortices from being formed or produced include the use of top submerged boundary around the pump pipe, hydro cone at the pump entrance or bell mouth entrance and baffles of different shapes and arrangements installed in the pump pit and/or at the pump entrance and are shown, for example in the United States of America patent number 6533543 dated March 18, 2003 by Tagomori, et al. Though such remedial measures have achieved limited success, there has been a continuing need for improvements. This invention relates to the creation or application of surface roughness to top submerged boundaries around the pump pipe, to hydro cones at the pump entrance or bell mouth entrance, to baffles of different shapes and arrangements installed in the pump pit and/or at the pump entrance, to the pump entrance or bell mouth entrance, to the pump pipe, to the pump pit walls and/or to the pump pit floor in order to effectively reduce, eliminate and/or prevent the said vortices from being formed or produced.
