ABSTRACT The invention relates to new antigens consisting of theophylline- (7)-alkanecarboxylic acids covalently bonded to immunogenic carriers via the carboxyl group. It has been found that antibodios which are obtained by injecting host animals with the new antigens are very suitable for the deter- mination of small amounts of theophylline in biological liquids, including complete blood and haemolytic blood, by the immuno-assay method. Suitable labelled theophylline compounds are, in particular, the theophylline-(7)- alkanecarboxylic acid amides with histamine, tyramino and tyrosine, iodinated with radioactive iodine isotopes, and enzyme- and fluorescence-labelled theophylline derivatives.
