An oral composition, suitable as a hypoglycemic agent, includes an isolate from the leaves of Gymnema sylvestre, having a specified molecular weight. The isolate has a molecular weight at least about 3000 Daltons as determined by molecular weight cut-off filtration. Glucose metabolism in a human Patient can be regulated by dosage forms that contain the aforesaid isolate from the leaves of Gymnema sylvestre, in combination with a non-metabolizable, water- swellable polysaccharide such as the exudate of Sterculia urens, and a water- soluble polysaccharide such as guar gum. Optionally, the present oral compositions can include a physiologically acceptable calcium source, a physiologically acceptable metal carbonate salt, a physiologically acceptable chromium salt, and/or a physiologically acceptable vanadium compound. In addition, antioxidants such as ascorbic acid, cholecalciferol, d-.alpha.- tocopherol, the carotenoids, lycopene, lutein, and the like, can be included as well. The present compositions are useful for amelioration of cholesterolemia, obesity, chronic complications of diabetes and prophylaxis for patients predisposed to the foregoing.
La présente invention concerne une composition orale pouvant être utilisée en tant qu'agent hypoglycémique ; laquelle composition comprend un isolat provenant des feuilles de Gymnema sylvestre, présentant un poids moléculaire spécifié. L'isolat présente un poids moléculaire d'au moins 3000 daltons déterminé par une filtration de coupure du poids moléculaire. Le métabolisme du glucose chez un patient humain peut être régulé par des formes posologiques contenant l'isolat susmentionné provenant des feuille de Gymnema sylvestre, combinées avec un polysaccharide dilatable avec l'eau et non métabolisable, tel que l'exsudat de Sterculia urens, et avec un polysaccharide hydrosoluble, tel que la gomme de Guar. Eventuellement, ces compositions orales peuvent comprendre une source de calcium physiologiquement acceptable, un sel de carbonate métallique physiologiquement acceptable, un sel de chrome physiologiquement acceptable, et/ou un composé de vanadium physiologiquement acceptable. En outre, des antioxydants, tels que l'acide ascorbique, le cholécalciférol, le d-.alpha.-tocophérol, les caroténoïdes, le lycopène, la lutéine, etc., peuvent être inclus dans ces compositions.
