The present invention relates generally to a method of modulating an inflammatory response in a mammal and to agents useful for same. More particularly, the present invention relates to a method of modulating an inflammatory response in a mammal by modulating the functional activity of activin and thereby modulating the pro-inflammatory mediator cascade. The method of the present invention is useful, inter alia, in the treatment and/or prophylaxis of conditions characterised by an aberrant, unwanted or otherwise inappropriate inflammatory response including, inter alia, sepsis and inflammation of the airway. The present invention is further directed to methods for identifying and/or designing agents capable of modulating activin mediated regulation of the inflammatory response.

L'invention concerne de manière générale un procédé de modulation d'une réaction inflammatoire chez un mammifère, et des agents utiles à cet effet. Plus particulièrement, elle concerne un procédé visant à moduler, chez un mammifère, une réaction inflammatoire par la modulation de l'activité fonctionnelle de l'activine, afin de moduler la cascade de réactions pro-inflammatoires des neurotransmetteurs. Ce procédé est utile, entre autres, pour traiter et/ou prévenir des états pathologiques caractérisés par une réaction inflammatoire aberrante, indésirable ou autrement inappropriée, y compris, entre autres, la septicémie et l'inflammation des voies aériennes. L'invention concerne de plus des procédés visant à identifier et/ou à concevoir des agents pouvant moduler la régulation, par l'intermédiaire de l'activine, de la réaction inflammatoire.
